Come Away With Me by Karma Brown

Come Away With Me by Karma Brown

I’ve mentioned before that I get overly emotional when reading certain books, even going as far as seeking out a book that will make me cry. But there is crying at a book and then there is crying at a book. And I mean real ugly sobbing mess crying. These books are few and far between. I started off the year reading one, Before I Go by Colleen Oakley, and did not expect to come across another one this year. That was until I read the synopsis for Come Away With Me, as a matter of fact, I came across this book […]

The Secrets of Lake Road by Karen Katchur

The Secrets of Lake Road by Karen Katchur

I think if I hadn’t read The Secrets of Lake Road immediately after having my heart ripped out by Come Away With Me (more about that one on Monday), I think I would’ve enjoyed it a LOT more. It was a quick read that’s for sure, not quite the frantic-page-turning suspense of Pretty Baby but certainly on par with The Ones We Trust (bickering adults acting like teenagers aside). The Secrets of Lake Road would have been the perfect vacation book, if I’d known then what I know now I would definitely have saved this one for vacation. They say hindsight is a […]

My Very Best Friend by Cathy Lamb

My Very Best Friend by Cathy Lamb

When I received an email a few weeks ago with the subject “Kilts, a Scottish man, and lingerie bike riding at night.” I was definitely intrigued. (I will add that Outlook found the email inappropriate and sent it straight to the junk box!) Even better was that the email was from Cathy Lamb asking if I’d review her latest, My Very Best Friend. She even admitted to eating too much chocolate, drinking too much coffee, and daydreaming the day away. Seriously, she and I could be the same person! Except I haven’t published 10 books, and I’m not nearly as funny […]

The Ones We Trust by Kimberly Belle

The Ones We Trust by Kimberly Belle

Kimberly Belle’s debut novel, The Last Breath, was one of my favorite books of 2014 so her next book was going to come with some level of expectation. Of course, I had been anticipating The Ones We Trust since Kimberly shared some brief details about it last November. Did it meet those expectations? Well, I read it in a day! The only book I have read in a day in a long, long time. When reading The Last Breath, I guessed one of the twists quite early on but it didn’t deter my enjoyment of the book. While reading The […]

Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica

Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica

I’ve been anticipating Pretty Baby ever since I interviewed Mary Kubica last August, shortly after the release of her debut The Good Girl, which blew me away and left me speechless. I’ve also had a copy on my shelf since March, and because I prefer to read advanced copies as close to publication as possible (it’s easier to rave about it with everyone else when it’s fresh in my memory) plus sheer willpower, I just read Pretty Baby last week. And wouldn’t you know, Mary Kubica did it again. She has written a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing […]

Dear Carolina by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Dear Carolina by Kristy Woodson Harvey

I have to quickly thank Tamara for virtually introducing me to Kristy, and also to Kristy for graciously sending me a copy of Dear Carolina. I started reading Dear Carolina as soon as it arrived in my mailbox, but it’s taken me a few weeks to really digest the story and be able to even attempt putting my thoughts down in writing. Dear Carolina is “written to baby Carolina, by both her birth mother and her adoptive mother” and proves that “families aren’t born, they’re made”. Khaki desperately wants to expand her family by having a second child, but it just […]

Three Rivers by Tiffany Quay Tyson PLUS Giveaway

Three Rivers by Tiffany Quay Tyson PLUS Giveaway

I shared an excerpt of Tiffany Quay Tyson’s debut novel Three Rivers yesterday, and now I’m going to tell you just how much I loved the book and give you a chance to win your own copy! I started Three Rivers slowly, taking my time to get acquainted with the three characters whose stories were being told in alternating chapters. They are all wanderers – Obi, who lives by the river with his young son, and when I say by the river I don’t mean in a house. They live freely moving from one place to the next. Melody, left […]

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Posted July 15, 2015 in Reviews / 1 Comment

With Maybe in Another Life, Taylor Jenkins Reid explores the choices we each make every single day of our lives. After moving back to LA, Hannah is posed with the choice of staying out with her high school boyfriend, Ethan, or returning home with her best friend, Gabby. The book proceeds with alternating chapters following Hannah’s story if she chose Ethan, or if she chose Gabby. Do these choices define our lives, the people we meet, where we end up? Or is that all decided for us and what happens happens no matter how we got there. In each of […]

As Night Falls by Jenny Milchman

As Night Falls by Jenny Milchman

I just mentioned As Night Falls in my Best of 2015 (so far) list on Tuesday, and declared it to be in my “top three books so far this year (maybe even including last year)”. Just to put it into perspective, I have read over 100 books since January last year. That being said, I understand that it is quite a bold statement to make, however, every now and again you read a book that blows you away. As Night Falls was one such book. The characters drew me in from the start, the secrets, the mystery and how it all […]

The Status of All Things by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke

The Status of All Things by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke

The Status of All Things delved in to the over-sharing of our lives on social media. How many will only share what they want others to see, hide what they don’t, and how this detail is perceived by others. Have you ever bumped in to someone for the first time in forever, only to discover they do not look anything like that carefully chosen profile picture? Maybe they portray themselves as a happily married couple online, but in real life there is trouble in paradise? What about you…are you selective about what you post on social media so that you are […]
