Brenda's Top 10 Romantic Destinations

The 10th installment to Brenda Novak’s bestselling Whiskey Creek series was released last week. To celebrate this milestone, Brenda is sharing her Top 10 Romantic Destinations with My Novel Opinion readers. I also have a copy of Discovering You to giveaway to ONE lucky reader (more details below).

Brenda’s Top-10 Romantic Destinations

Whether it’s the cozy eatery around the corner where you had your first date or a beautiful view of the sunset from your own porch, there is romance around us everyday. As great as those familiar places are, however, you’re used to them. Every once in a while, it’s good to get out of your comfort zone and visit someplace new. If you’re looking to get out of town for a bit and make some memories with the one you love, here are a few places I’d recommend:

1. Whidbey Island, Washington

This beautiful island is a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland. There’s something special about that ferry ride that makes you feel like you’re leaving the rest of your life behind and only focusing on the person sitting there next to you. Take a stroll under the majestic redwoods that watch over the island, and be sure to check out the adorable Clyde Theatre, a movie theater established in 1937 that often has special screenings and events. I first saw Whidbey when I was visiting Seattle to do research for COLD FEET (my second romantic suspense title). If you haven’t read that book, it might be a fun one to take along.

2. Italian Riviera

If you’re able and willing to spend a little more, it’s hard to find somewhere more beautiful than this place. You’ll fall in love with the breathtaking landscape and sapphire water, the beautiful old architecture in Cinque Terre, and the lovely weather. The casual pace of the Italian Riviera makes it a great destination to connect with the one you love and to savor each day.

3. Napa Valley, California

I’d be remiss if I didn’t recommend this beautiful place right around the corner from me! I visit there all the time with my hubby. You could tour vineyards together, taste some of the best wine anywhere in the world, and relax at one of the many incredible hotels or bed and breakfasts. Believe it or not, we go for the spectacular delis. There’s even a hotel called the Poetry Inn for crying out loud! It can’t get more romantic than that, can it? And if pairing books is anything like pairing wine, I’d recommend a Whiskey Creek novel for this adventure (like DISCOVERING YOU, which has just come out). Whiskey Creek is a gold rush town, so every book in the series has the unique California flavor you’ll also be experiencing in Napa.

4. Paris, France

The City of Lights is a great place to honeymoon or just spend some much-needed personal time with your partner. Fuel for some of the best romantic literature and poetry and home to some of the world’s most stunning art, Paris has as much culture-per-square-foot as any place in the universe. On top of that, French cuisine is simply delicious, so you really can’t go wrong wherever you eat.

Oddly enough, I had the best lasagna I’ve ever eaten in Paris (and I had just come from Italy)!

5. Cape Cod

A charming New England retreat, “the Cape” is known for its quaint cottages and crab shacks. The laid back personality of the town makes a getaway trip truly relaxing, and you’ll have all the long beach walks and delicious seafood that you can handle.

6. St. Lucia

This lovely island country has a huge selection of resorts to choose from – all offering some outstanding combination of food, spa amenities, relaxation, and adventure. The Ladera Resort, for example, is situated on the Soufriere Volcano (exciting), and each suite has an open (yet private) wall that connects you directly to the lush tropical paradise outside. They even throw in a pair of binoculars and a star chart to give you an informed look at the beautiful night sky.

7. Charleston, South Carolina

This historical city is Southern hospitality at its finest. Take a stroll (or my favorite, a carriage ride) through the cobblestone streets and check out the beautiful antebellum homes. Also be sure to stop by Cypress Gardens, a filming location for the “The Notebook.” I first visited Charleston looking for the perfect place to set a new island series—and found it when I toured Daufuskie Island, the inspiration for Fairham Island. So for those lazy mornings when your partner sleeps in? You might want to spend a quiet hour reading the first in that series, THE SECRET SISTER.

8. Greek Isles

The Cyclades rivals the Italian Riviera in terms of beautiful European vistas. Views of the turquoise waters and rural mountains and cliffs are at every turn. These islands are particularly great for long, leisurely strolls. Check out the Kleftiko Beach and Hiking Trail Fira – Ora.

9. Maui, Hawaii

I just got back from here, so I had to include it. I absolutely fell in love with this island. Whether you’re relaxing on the white sand beaches, taking a (white-knuckle) road trip up the historic Road to Hana, or enjoying some of the best sunrises and sunsets on the planet, Maui is consistently one of the most beautiful, romantic getaways around. The whales were running while I was there, so I saw more than one breach. Spectacular!

10. Catalina Island, California

Board the Catalina Express and cruise 22 miles (as with Whidbey Island, there’s just something special about taking a boat to your romantic getaway), and in no time at all you’ll find yourself in a Pacific paradise. There are countless great restaurants and things to do. We rented bicycles when I was there, but if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can take a zip-line tour of the island.

And if all of these are beyond your budget? No worries! Some of my favorite romantic getaways haven’t been getaways at all. They’ve been stay-cations, where my husband and I give each other a massage, make a delicious meal (Costco sometimes sells crab legs, and they are to DIE FOR), and watch a favorite movie. (My all-time romantic fav? LAST OF THE MOHICANS!)

About Discovering You (Whiskey Creek #10)

Discovering You

India Sommers once had the perfect family—until an ex-boyfriend broke in and shot her husband. Not only did that cost her the man she loved, a respected heart surgeon and the father of her child, but she also feels responsible. Charlie died because of the people she hung out with before she had the strength to change her life.

Just after moving to Whiskey Creek with her little girl, Cassia, to start over, she’s learned that her ex-boyfriend’s trial ended in a hung jury. He’s getting out of jail; he could try to find her again. And that’s not all that scares her. She’s extremely attracted to her next-door neighbor, but Rod Amos is the handsome “bad boy” type that’s given her so much trouble in the past. If she got involved with him, her in-laws would sue for custody of Cassia.

India has to keep her distance from Rod—but the more she gets to know him, the more difficult that becomes.
