One minute, Tegan Lawson has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a devastating accident that will change her life in ways she never could have imagined.
Tegan is consumed by grief, not to mention her anger toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash. But just when she thinks she's hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations and experiences, and so begins an adventure of a lifetime.
From the bustling markets of Thailand to the flavors of Italy to the ocean waves in Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and search for forgiveness. But they soon learn that grief follows you no matter how far away you run, and that acceptance comes when you least expect it.
Heartbreaking, hopeful and utterly transporting, Come Away with Me is an unforgettable debut and a luminous celebration of the strength of the human spirit.
I’ve mentioned before that I get overly emotional when reading certain books, even going as far as seeking out a book that will make me cry. But there is crying at a book and then there is crying at a book. And I mean real ugly sobbing mess crying. These books are few and far between. I started off the year reading one, Before I Go by Colleen Oakley, and did not expect to come across another one this year. That was until I read the synopsis for Come Away With Me, as a matter of fact, I came across this book within a matter of days of finishing reading Before I Go. Colleen and Karma are both 2015 debs on The Debutante Ball (a website following five debut authors on their journey, five new authors are selected each year).
Anyway, I’ve been delaying writing this review because Come Away With Me is one of those books that you can’t talk about without giving anything away. So in lieu of writing a very vague review, I’m sharing five things you will need while reading Come Away With Me, and some of the highs and lows of the emotional rollercoaster ride that I shared with Tegan and Gabe.
Be Prepared
- A full day: I did not want to put this book down and wish I had had a full day to read it in one sitting
- Tissues: Tears were shed within the first few chapters
- Twitter: To share your feels with other readers
- More Tissues: For the ugly cry that will inevitably come
- A supportive husband/boyfriend/wife/girlfriend/or just a friend: To pass you said tissues, and to hug you in silence when you turn the last page.
Emotional Rollercoaster
- Sadness: At Gabe and Tegan’s loss after the accident
- Jealousy: At the trip they are taking to Thailand, Italy and Hawaii
- Joy: That they are taking this trip and there is light at the end of the tunnel
- Relief: That everything seems to be okay, and that Gabe and Tegan can work everything out
- Heartbreak: By the end, and after all the other dips and loops of the emotional rollercoaster, I was left feeling like my heart had been torn into tiny, tiny pieces!
So there you have it. I definitely recommend reading Come Away With Me but don’t say I didn’t warn you…be prepared!
