Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they provide a different prompt and book bloggers, like me, share top ten lists.
This week’s topic is Most Anticipated Debut Novels For 2015.
16 of the 74 books I read last year were debut authors, and the majority were at least a 4-star read. Seven debuts even made it to my best of 2014 list! That being said, it can be difficult to gauge whether a book by a debut author will be a good fit for me or not, since the only thing I have to go off is the synopsis and any publisher blurbs. Here is a list of 10 debut books that have already caught my eye for 2015.
The 10 Best Books I Read in 2014
The details:
- Before I Go by Colleen Oakley – January 6th / Gallery Books – I already read this one and it was heartbreaking, look out for my review later this week.
- Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper – January 20th / Simon & Schuster – An elderly woman walks across Canada. A journey of rediscovery.
- The Sweetheart by Angelina Mirabella – January 20th / Simon & Schuster – Set in the 1950’s, girl next door turns pro-wrestler!
- One Step Too Far by Tina Seskis – January 27th / William Morrow – Emily Coleman has everything but one day disappears and starts a new life with a new identity.
- The Cake House by Latifah Shalom – March 3rd / Vintage – A reimagining of Hamlet in LA, part coming-of-age, part mystery. Plus ghosts!
- The Daughter by Jane Shemilt – March 3rd / William Morrow – A child goes missing and secrets are revealed.
- Hugo and Rose by Bridget Foley – May 5th / St. Martin’s Press – Rose finds the man of her dreams, literally!
- Come Away With Me by Karma Brown – May 26th / Harlequin MIRA – A devastating car accident sends couple on a journey to forgiveness via Thailand, Italy, Hawaii and more.
- Three Rivers by Tiffany Quay Tyson – June 23rd / Thomas Dunne Books – a Southern literary debut telling three parallel stories.
- The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert – July 21st / Gallery Books – Food AND love in Wisconsin.
Of course I am drawn to the cake covers! I look forward to your review on Before I Go it looks devastatingly good.

I am going to be so spoiled for choice for reading material the first half of this year, I hope that I’ll still manage to read some of the books I already own. And you are right, I looked at other lists and had to stop myself from adding too many new books to my wishlist!
Great list, Helen; can’t wait to see your review on Before I Go. I’ve heard lots of folks talking about that one. Have a great day!

I just prowl Edelweiss every now and again and see what looks interesting, it’s a habit I should really stop because it’s not good for my TBR.
I’m looking forward to The Daughter, and Three Rivers looks good to me also. Of course how can anyone resist the book with a cake on the cover? Great list!

Oh yes, the cake cover! Hard to resist and will probably make me hungry while I read
Before I Go broke my heart a little. I loved it. I thought it was the perfect mix of heartbreak and hope with a good dose of humour mixed in for good measure.
Great list! I’ll have to check these out!

Before I Go left me bawling my eyes out! But I agree that there was a good mix of humor to it as well.
Thank you so much, Helen, for including COME AWAY WITH ME! Cover to come soon
I can’t wait to see the cover, Karma!
Thank you so much for including Before I Go (and for showing ti so much love in your review!) And I agree with your list — can’t wait to read The Coincidence of Coconut Cake and Come Away With Me, especially! (And now I want coconut cake).
I know, right. I want coconut cake too I have requests in for both of those novels so fingers crossed I get to read them soon.
Thank you for including THE COINCIDENCE OF COCONUT CAKE! I can second that BEFORE I GO is magnificent and I can’t wait to read COME AWAY WITH ME by Karma! The Cake House and Hugo and Rose look wonderful too!
Your book sounds right up my alley, Amy, so of course I had to include it! BEFORE I GO was just amazing, I can’t stop recommending it. I’m certainly looking at some great reading material over the next few months.
Wait. The Coconut Cake book is set in Wisconsin? Okay. I’m heading over to NetGalley right now.
