My Rating:
From the New York Times bestselling author of On Mystic Lake comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . .
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer’s end they’ve become TullyandKate. Inseparable.
Kristin Hannah’s first book was published more than 20 years ago, and she now has 20 novels to her name. I have to admit up until a few weeks ago when Amazon.com was kind enough to recommend Hannah’s 21st release FLY AWAY to me, I had never heard of Kristin Hannah.
If I am not familiar with an author I am usual drawn in by the cover, so I clicked on FLY AWAY and read the synopsis, discovering that it was a sequel to Hannah’s 2008 release FIREFLY LANE. I immediately purchased the Kindle version and started to read my new book.
I finished FIREFLY LANE in two days, it would’ve been a three day read but I could not put this book down on day two. I will admit to sobbing (almost uncontrollably) throughout the final two chapters.
FIREFLY LANE takes you on a journey of friendship starting in the 1970’s when Tully moves in across the street from Kate. Initially, it seems that they don’t have much in common but slowly they become inseparable.
At 479 pages, FIREFLY LANE is not a quick read, but I was quickly drawn in with the idea of everlasting friendship. When the unexpected happens, a falling out between Tully & Kate, you want to continue reading willing them to talk to each other and to not throwaway a lifetime of memories together.
Part way through I found myself wondering if there really was such a thing as forever friendship? I was so pleased with how the book ended, Hannah did a wonderful job with this novel and I can’t wait to read more of her work. I’m especially looking forward to FLY AWAY and already have it on pre-order!
The story held my attention throughout and I truly did not want it to end. Luckily, there is a second installment coming out soon and I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy!
I have added quite a few of Kristin Hannah’s books to my TBR shelf on Goodreads, which do you recommend I read first? Do you have a favorite?
Great review!

Yes Kristin Hannah can evoke the tears! I think one of the ones I liked most was her Winter Garden – I listened to it on audio. Loved it.
Liked this one too, but have yet to read the sequel to it.
